ISLAMABAD: According to a statement released by the mission, representatives from the German Embassy paid a visit to Jaranwala on Friday to show their support for the Christian community.

During the visit, Dorota Berezicki, the head of communications and cultural affairs, and Julia Klein, a human rights counselor, met with the affected families and assessed the fallout from the horrifying mob violence that had led to the destruction of houses of worship and homes belonging to the Christian community in Jaranwala.

Bishop Indiras Rehmat, members from the local church, the Caritas Office in Faisalabad, and others gave the committee an overview of the reality on the ground and the difficulties the community is facing as they work to restore their lives.

The embassy provided emergency supply packages donated by the local and German workers to the affected families right away. The donations consist of necessities including food, clothing, bedding, and hygienic products.

"Germany maintains its unwavering dedication to the values of peace, toleration, and interfaith harmony. No family should ever feel unsafe in their own home because of their religious beliefs, the statement continued.

On August 16, a mob attacked a number of churches and set a large number of homes on fire after accusing Christians of blasphemy.

According to police spokesman Naveed Ahmad, the event happened in Jaranwala town of the industrial area of Faisalabad. He said that a crowd had invaded the neighborhood after two Christians were accused of blasphemy.

Akmal Bhatti, a prominent Christian, claimed that after clerics made statements in mosques inciting the mob, the crowd set fire to at least five churches and stole goods from empty homes.

Several social media posts included images of burning homes, possessions, and churches.

The Punjab interim government's spokesperson acknowledged that more than 100 persons have been detained for their suspected involvement in riots in Faisalabad's Jaranwala over alleged blasphemy during which members of the Christian minority were targeted.
