Rearrested under the 3-MPO :: PTI President Parvez Elahi
Parvez Elahi, the president of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf and a former chief minister of Punjab, was detained again by the Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) police under 3-MPO (Maintenance of Public Order) soon after being freed by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB), according to reports.
According to the individuals with knowledge of the situation, the seasoned politician would be placed under house arrest at Adiala jail for the next 15 days.
The anti-graft watchdog was instructed to free Elahi earlier today by the Lahore High Court (LHC).
The NAB's attempt to arrest the former provincial chief executive in a corruption investigation was challenged in a plea by the former executive.
After Elahi was brought before the court, LHC Justice Amjad Rafiq made the announcement of the decision.
Justice Rafiq told NAB at the hearing that if Elahi was not brought today, the court will issue a warrant against the director-general of the accountability authority.
A thorough investigation of his arrest, according to Justice Rafiq, will be carried out. The judge said, "I am directing Parvez Elahi's immediate release."
Elahi remarked, in response to questions from the media following the court, "I thank God for the judge's order for my release and I thank everyone who prayed for me."
On August 29, the PTI leader filed a motion with the court to contest his imprisonment, arguing that the LHC's directives prohibiting the government from arresting Elahi in any unreported FIR or active investigation were violated by his detention.
During his second stint as chief minister of Punjab, NAB accused Elahi of taking over Rs 1 billion in kickbacks through middlemen in more than 200 development projects in the Gujrat district.
Elahi was first detained on June 1 outside of his home in connection with a Rs70 million fraud case involving the theft of development funds designated for the Gujrat district.
Since then, Imran Khan's assistant has been imprisoned on a number of counts. The PTI leader was repeatedly released pursuant to court rulings over the course of around two and a half months, but was promptly detained again after each release.
Following the riots on May 9, he was detained as part of a crackdown on the party's leadership.
